The Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy is looking for a software application developer. The successful candidate will join the Space Weather Group to provide technical support to the development and operation of space weather services.

Division, context

The Space Weather group within the Space Physics division develops services related to conditions in the near-Earth space environment (radiation belts, cosmic radiation, magnetosphere, ...) and its effects on both space and ground based technology as well as human health related activities. Within the framework of the Space Safety Programme (S2P) of the European Space Agency (ESA), the Space Weather group is responsible for coordinating/operating the Space Radiation Expert Service Centre (R-ESC) and the SSA Space Weather Coordination Centre (SSCC). Both entities play a key role in the establishment of a network of space weather services targeting a large user community whose operational systems (in space, in the air and on the ground) can be severely affected by Space Weather (more information can be found on the website). With respect to space weather and aviation, the group is also involved in international projects outside ESA’s space weather programme.


The Space Weather group consists of ten employees, both scientists and IT specialists. You will mainly be responsible for the IT support and be very closely involved in space weather related ESA and non-ESA projects. You will contribute to the maintenance of existing applications and develop software applications in support of space weather services operation and development. You will work closely with the IT department of the Institute.

Required competences
  • Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in 'information technology, computer science or electronics' or hold an equivalent degree.
  • You’re not older than 26 years old (this is an official condition of the starters job contract)
Technical skills
  • You have good knowledge of MySQL, XML, XSLT
  • You have good knowledge of web development (PHP, HTML/CSS/JavaScript)
  • You have good knowledge of Linux, bash and Windows
  • You have a basic knowledge of Python
  • Knowledge of general office automation applications such as Word and PowerPoint.

Not required, but considered as an asset
  • Interest in space weather.
  • A good knowledge of French and/or Dutch as you will work in a bilingual environment.
